The Produce Lady E-Newsletter

Welcome to this first issue of The Produce Lady newsletter. Every month we will serve up information about North Carolina-grown products, featuring a different fruit or vegetable in each issue. Because other farm products – such as beef, pork, poultry, lamb, fish, cheese and honey – pair well with delicious produce we’ll share information about them as well.

The Produce Lady project supports our farmers by providing information to both farmers and consumers on how to select, prepare, store and preserve Nature’s bounty. That’s important these days when we all need to extend our food dollars. We all benefit because we return money to our local communities, and we enjoy fresher, tastier and often more nutritious produce. How can you beat that!

Whether you are a consumer, farmer or market manager, I invite you to use my tips in your kitchen, market stall or market information booth. Take a look at my online videos and other resources at www.theproducelady.org.

The Produce Basket

Apples are symbolic of all that’s good about us – think Mom and apple pie. And they are good for us, particularly when we bite into an apple that hasn’t been peeled. The apple skin gives us an antioxidant boost which helps support immunity and bone health. They are high in fiber and contain vitamins A and C.

One of the delights of fall is to visit a North Carolina apple farm or to buy North Carolina-grown apples at your local farmers market. You will be rewarded with a crisp, flavorful crunch that’s hard to find with store-bought apples. If the only apples you’ve ever eaten are Red Delicious, make sure you branch out and try some of the other varieties. It just wouldn’t be fall without apple cider and North Carolina apples for snacks, salads, sauce and delicious desserts!
